Plumbing / Fire Protection Engineer - Chicago

Plumbing / Fire Protection Engineer

Responsibilities:
  • Support the firm in the design of projects of all scales and complexities for a variety of project types, including mixed-use, commercial, academic, healthcare, residential, hospitality and civic, both domestic and international; both new construction and retrofits
  • Understand and apply engineering principles and fundamentals of fire protection design including but not limited to fire pump calculations, pipe sizing, gas suppression, deluge, pre-action systems, and high-rise design
  • Responsible for plumbing and gas piping layout/sizing; pump head calculations; plumbing fixtures and equipment selection; coordination with equipment vendors and other in-house disciplines; and shop drawing review for plumbing systems
  • Understand and apply proper interpretation of building codes and national fire codes
  • Comply with and promote PositivEnergy Practice design standards and quality assurance procedures
  • Develop contract documents (plans, specifications, and opinions of probable cost) for fire protection, smoke control, and fire alarm
  • Review shop drawings and resolve installation problems for all disciplines
  • Conduct site observations to assess, evaluate, and document existing conditions as well as provide estimates of probable cost to establish code compliance or equivalency
  • Plumbing/Fire Protection project management
  • Experience involving the design of automatic sprinkler, standpipe, and fire pump systems; clean agent suppression systems; hydraulic calculations; shop drawing review and fire protection system start-up and testing observation
  • Perform design in both AutoCAD and Revit design software
  • Meet project deadlines as required by Clients’ demands
Requirements:
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in analysis and design of plumbing and/or fire protection systems
  • Engineering Degree (BS Architectural Engineering, BS Mechanical Engineering, BS Fire Protection Engineering, or equivalent degree) preferred
  • Experience in Revit MEP and experience modeling HVAC, Electrical and Plumbing
  • Action-oriented and collaborative
  • Self-motivated team player with ability to work well independently
  • Good verbal and written and skills
